On Holiday - 12/18/2021

 Today has been dubbed cookie day. 

Because we are doing a gift exchange in my small group for Bible Study, I am making a couple dozen cookies for each person to pass, which means 6 dozen cookies. And eventually more...

I had also planned on making sour dough bread from the sourdough starter I got from the store, but since  I got it yesterday, I dont have enough time to make it for my dish to pass tomorrow (  need like 5 days or so to go from a dry starter to an active one). I didnt remember this, so I went to the local bread store and got a couple of loaves - country sourdough and a lemon rosemary sourdough. I'm sure it will be fine. 

So I have a San Francisco Starter being activated and a hometown Starter on day 4 of 14. Lot's of bread in my future if it all works. 

So I'm concentrating on cookies then. 

I have Snickerdoodles in the oven, and Oatmeal Raisin, and finally Chocolate Chip.

I kept changing my mind but these are three cookies I know people like and I can make well. So far the Snickerdoodles smell amazing! 

Later on...

Well the cookies turned out well, but I had to make a second batch to get enough nice looking oatmeal raisin. I think this cookie is just temperamental because it has so much sugar in it. It can burn one cookie and not be done enough on another in the same tray using the same scoop!

Before breakfast, I punched down the sourdough that was now more than doubled. Then I pushed it into a wide flat shape and rolled it up, tucking it into a loaf pan. I let it sit until after the lunch time baking was done. For lunch we made khachapuri. This was my friend's recipe I mentioned earlier. Since my stand mixer was in the dishwasher I used the breadmaker to mix the dough. When it was ready I asked if the kids wanted one of the dough balls to make their own. Here is what each of us did. COVID-19 Virus, Day 138

I haven't had much to say lately.  I'm diving deep into why I eat more than I should. I'm taking this online course through Daily OM to learn how to communicate better. You know, once I have something to say.  I bought a shirt that says "Warning Starving Dieter May Bite If Provoked".  I'm taking my martial arts classes, getting into the groove of that.  This week I made tacos.  This is how I do it.  From the top: Paprika, garlic powder, chili powder, onion powder, cumin, and salt on a pound of hamburger.  Chop and cook. Serve with tortillas, tortilla chips, tomatoes, sour cream, cheddar cheese, and lettuce. Sometimes guacamole.  But you gotta get the restaurant style white tortilla chips. Heaven! Today I made chicken and dumplings by request.  First you par cook the chicken.  Which just means cook it til brown on the outside in butter in a pot.  Then I took these out and added chopped onion, celery (out of my garden!) and carrot.  This is mire poix.  Add the c

Writing a cookbook and Coffee Cake

I'm starting another project. I know what you're going to say, she never finishes any of these! Yeah, you are right about that. Except for sometimes, when things really seem to pan out, I end up finishing them. I can't explain why some things do and some don't. My brain is always full of ideas, and usually a new one seems better than the one I'm bogged down in, so I switch to the better idea. Maybe i'm just fickle? What makes the cookbook project special you might ask? Besides the fact that considering how to write a cookbook is overwhelmingly huge, given all the ideas I have around it, one of the appeals is that i have to try out and perfect every recipe. There are 120 of them just for dinners. I have a feeling that's going to take a while. And I get to try them all. That sounds exciting and sort of science-projecty. What makes me think I won't wander off to something else? Food is all encompassing in my life. I always come back around to it.  If
