Life got busy, I tried some free Hello Fresh

So the hubby came home yesterday with a box of Hello Fresh meals. Seems if you are a subscriber you get some free meals to give away for your friends to try. And he has this friend, you see.

Far be it for me to pass on three free meals, right?

Here's what my honest opinion is: Mixed Review. Why?

Disadvantages?
3 meals would be about 160 dollars. I can get 5 to 7 for that price if I buy it myself, chop and sort it myself.

I would say if you are a beginner, this does not give enough information. For example, they say to put the sour cream on the fish. What they didn't point out is that if you don't pat the fish dry first, the sour cream will not stick. Fortunately I already knew this, but if you never made fish before you would not.

I would add more pictures of making the different parts because I got confused and missed a step. I read the directions 4 times, honest. But when I got done I had leftover parts.

And finally, you have to provide your own oil. The amount is a lie. It says 2 Tbsp for 4 big fillets of fish, but in order to make it look like the picture, because it has panko crumbs (think little dry sponges)  you need 2 Tbsp for each fillet, so a total of 8 Tbsp.

Advantages?
Everything was in the paper bag. But not the meat. So no meat juices on the vegs.
The box came with a silver bag, inside were big freezie packs with the meat packages on top.
The bag was a recyclable place to put your veggie trimmings.
Not much waste at all, they do a good job with that.
Not too many dishes to wash.
Recipe is big, colorful, has pictures of the finished dish.
Lots of food, not too much, not too little. Fed our family of four quite well. I was worried about the portions, but this is spot on.
It tasted really good. I kept the recipe.

So I suppose if you dont cook often but want to do it more, you hate shopping, and have a healthy bank account, and know a little about cooking,  this might work for you.

But to me, I'd rather just try the recipes myself and skip the shipping to my house part.
Now that I've forgiven Kroger ClickList, shopping is not a big issue.

Here are my pics:

First squeeze lime on the fish

Add sour cream sauce on top.

  1. These kits seem convenient, but pricey. If I were smart, I would devise a complete shopping/menu list to efficiently use all leftovers. Like a do-it-myself meal kit.
